  • Stop Political Robo Calling

      This is my story.

      I was:

      • Sick and tired of the screaming that has become politics in this country.
      • Sick and tired of the red and blue split in our nation.
      • Sick and tired of people whining and complaining about the situation and NOT doing anything.

So.... I decided to become part of the solution, rather than part of the problem.

So, after being a volunteer for 20 years of Democratic elections and making countless phone banking calls that did little good at all I decided to quit my full time job at the Motley Fool and found my own non-partisan non-profit organization: Citizens for Civil Discourse.

After volunteering for Jim Webb (D-VA) in 2006 I realized that phone banking was adding to the lack of civility in discourse. 100's of voters were angry that I was calling them at home. They were confused. "I thought I was on the Do Not Call list?" They would scream.

I decided to do something about this situation. Now.

Well, politicians are exempt from the Federal Do Not Call list. And they make 100's of millions of robo calls each election cycle. In fact, according to the PEW research group, robo calls are now the top form of political communication by members of congress.

I realized that I was doing more harm than good and decided to fight back on behalf of all voters to start the nation's first Political Do Not Call Registry . As a result I was asked to testify at the US Senate 2.27 by Senator Feinstein on the impact of robo calls on voters.

T he impact on voter's lives is staggering , with voters in primary states reporting receiving 10-15 calls a day during an election season.

At the voluntary National Political Do Not Contact Registry, our members report receiving 10 to 15 calls about robocalls each day during election season. Mothers are having their babies awakened from naps. Night shift workers who sleep during the day are not able to get the rest they need to be productive. Seniors live in fear of a health emergency occurring while their phone line is tied up with yet another robocall.

As a member wrote to us recently: "My 85-year-old mother who had a stroke sometimes is at home alone, and when these phone calls come in, it confuses her and gets her upset when someone doesn't listen to her. She doesn't understand that it is an automated call."

It is time for these calls to stop.

So, the politician(s) that will get my vote will be those that agree to stop spamming people's phones with robo calls and let the voters learn about the candidates and the issues via other communication channels.
